Maybe you think too much or look for too much. You sound like a frustrated teenager...hehehe. You must take in consideration that these people are taught these superstitions or traditions or culture by their parents. Not everyone in Taiwan or the same city came from the same place...maybe a few gene...

You know there are different reasons for that. First Regionalism...people from different regions have different traditions or some form of it but different. Also people have their own personal superstitions...you generalize too much. Not everything is so uniform.

Yeah, you don't necessarily need to know Pinyin to learn Mandarin. Although if you are a Westerner and used to the Roman alphabet then I suggest you use it to make things easier. There are pros and cons to using pinyin. You can get lost in it if you aren't used to it. And you might get mixed up betw...

Oh handwriting recognition......Yuck....sometimes its so hard to get what you want for it. You really have to write nice and neat and clear. But I think that's how it is with all handwriting recognition device.

I own one made by BESTA, it has Canto too. I really like it and its very dependable. I paid some 400 bucks for mine tho but it came with two cards.
