美珍香 Bee 'Cheng' Hiang

It was interesting to see the 「美珍香 Bee Cheng Hiang」 sign in Taiwan, as very few signs in Taiwan have Minnan romanization, and Bee Cheng Hiang is a company from Singapore. http://www.bch.com.sg/ http://www.bch.tw/ http://www.bch.hk/ Unfortunately, they got the pronunciation wrong; while 珍 and 貞 are h...

Re: Variants!

tang-si 當時 when? as opposed to (Penang) ki-si 幾是. This last one I think is from Cantonese, as the first character is pronounced "kui" elsewhere. Old Cantonese (pre-1940's) used to pronounce it "ki" rather than "kei". It is also pronounced ti-si?, so might it be related...

Re: "easy" and "difficult" in Penang Hokkien

In Taiwan, 艱苦 (kan1-khoo2) means "arduous; painful; in misery; sad; to not feel well".

To say something is "easy/hard to + verb", we would say "ho2/phainn2 + verb".

Re: How to "change" in Penang Hokkien

煞 is much more commonly used to write suah4 than 遂 in Taiwan.

However, 遂 is often used in Classical Chinese and in older or more formal Mandarin literature.

Re: POJ covert tool

No, there isn't such a tool, and it would not be easy to write one because the pronunciation of a character depends highly on its context.

Re: Buddhist sermons in Penang Hokkien

Interesting; tiam7-tiam7 (恬恬) in Taiwan means "quiet; quietly; to be quiet (i.e. shut up)"
  • 恬恬!
    Be quiet! / Shut up!
  • 恬恬食三碗公(半)
(lit. to quietly eat three (and a half) big bowls of food)
describes a person who does not appear to be aggressive, but in reality is very much so

Re: Buddhist sermons in Penang Hokkien

tsiam7-si5 暫時 Barclay gives 漸 for the first character. Any opinion on the suitability of this? In my opinion, 漸 (gradual, gradually) does not fit. Also, in my usage, 無理由 means "without reason, unreasonable, illogical, irrational". Consequently, I suppose that 有理由 could mean "to make ...
