Re: Taiwanese movie Din Tau
I didn't even think of that. Good analysis. I just thought the actor for the main character just couldn't speak minnanhua properly. I know what ehiau but what is thiann taigi? I can only listen to Medan/Penang style hokkien well but can't really speak. My family unbelievably chose not to speak any C...

Re: Help on researching my roots
Hi amhoanna,
Thanks for the reply. I haven't made the trip yet as I still don't know which is my ancestral village. I was hoping to get a copy of family's jiapu but my father's family are very westernised and apparently have already lost it. Very sad.

Taiwanese movie Din Tau
Long time lurker here. Haven't seen this posted before. If it has my apologies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEPJQzVSveE&feature=player_embedded I knew Taiwanese would be hard for me to understand (Medan lang here) but I am still disappointed I can only get maybe 1-2 words out of every ten. Gr...

Re: Longxi / Zhangzhou
I can listen to Medan Hokkien but I really had no idea what was going on save a few words here and there in the youtube link I posted. Andrew's link sounded more like Medan/ Penang Hokkien but I still can only get afew words here and there unfortunately. Btw I am interested in Longxi as well as this...

Re: Longxi / Zhangzhou
According to this youtube video, the village Shima is a village in Longhai county. The uploader puts in brackets besides Shima (Longxi). Does this mean Shima is the modern name for Longxi?

Re: Variants!
In Medan Hokkien we say "cang cui" to take a bath or shower. In regards to Penang people being stingy, apparently Medan Hokkien people are known to be stingy as well. My uni friends from Jakarta said this is a popular stereotype of Medan people. I didn't know until I went to uni about this...

Re: Msia/Singapore Hokkien borrowed words
I guess trade links between the two places would have been greater in colonial times. I think so too. From my family history research, I found out that my Penang Baba relatives had Malaccan Baba relatives, who in turn had (presumably) Peranakan relatives in Medan. My dad only vaguely knew the Malac...

Re: Msia/Singapore Hokkien borrowed words
Hi xng, Similarly, "lift" in British English and "elevator" in American English. For that matter, why make a distinction between Hokkien and non-Hokkien words? They seem to say "cit-ma" in Taiwan, and we say "tong-kim" or "tha-na". Lift and elevator...

Penang Hokkien vs Medan Hokkien
Hi all, Long time on and off lurker here. I was born in Medan but moved to Australia when I was little. Help on researching my roots
Hi all, New to the forum. I am going at the end of the holidays to HK to visit my wife's family and I was hoping to spend afew days going to Fujian to visit my ancestral village, if it still exists.
