Re: Buddhist sermons in Penang Hokkien

Indeed a vast treasure chest of Penang Hokkien! I wonder whether there are younger bhikkhus (or teachers of other religions) in Penang preaching in Hokkien. It's also interesting to learn that the teacher (the late Bhante Suvanno) was a Theravadin. From what I know, most Chinese Buddhists are follow...

Re: Bagan Hokkien 峇眼亞比个福建(同安)話

Ah-bin, thank you for your encouragement. I am really glad that you like the script. After recording the video, I realised that I spelled the first 願 "guān" as "kuān". I thought nobody noticed that, but apparently Loke Chin Wei noticed the discrepancy and gave me an opportunity t...

Bagan Hokkien 峇眼亞比个福建(同安)話

Hi all Long time not visiting this forum! Glad to see that it is still "alive" although the activities are not that robust nowadays. Meanwhile, I am experimenting with recording videos about Bagan (Bagansiapiapi) Hokkien. Here is my first video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SDzh6s5tiU A...

Re: Singular root of lán?

When you say "things that are usually shared", am I correct in understanding that you mean a sort of inherent quality of the thing posessed? Or does it really have to be a shared thing in the particular context? For example, could/would a single child say "gún lãu-pē" in your va...

Re: Singular root of lán?

夠範久無來啊! Gún in my variant is used for both "my" and "our" (beside "exclusive we"). Gúntau 阮兜 (or more natively and frequently gúnnaī 阮內) can mean both "our house/place" and "my house/place". In my variant, gúnhiaⁿ 阮兄 for "my elder brot...

Re: Comparisons

Thank you so much, Abun & Amhoanna for discussing about "pheng". It just dawned to me that my variant uses "pīng" more than "pí". I didn't realize that it's "pīng" but subconsciously thought that it's just an elided form of "pí". Not sure how man...
