it contains modern phrases up to the 1920's and 30's only, and modern Hakka vocabulary post-MacIver is influenced by borrowings from Cantonese and Mandarin via the media, where new items borrowed are pronounced in Hakka of course.

I saw something about a half third tone before a fourth tone. This definitely wasn't something they taught when I was in school.

Mandarin Chinese is quite easier to learn as compared to the traditional Cantonese. I would also prefer Mandarin Chinese over Cantonese
