Confirms two of our hypotheses:
- Sandhi form of 3rd tone is a high level tone.
- 2nd tone in young Penangites can materialise as a high rising tone.

He only mentions Penang Hokkien in the introductory chapter. The rest is only about Taiwanese Hokkien.

Thanks for the review, Abun. I have now downloaded this book and am enjoying going through it. Am impressed that the author is familiar with Penang Hokkien and has already mentioned it several times in the introductory chapters!

What is the meaning of this word? When my mother says it, the meaning I draw is of something being awkward or out of place which makes you feel uncomfortable, but in Taiwan it means to feel depressed and frustrated.

I think there should be two systems, Hanji and romanisation. Each should be capable of being written independently, but of course people can mix and interchange the two where necessary. I don't think hiragana is politically suitable or technically suited to Hokkien phonology. As for Hanji standardis...

The number of entries is quite impressive. The most common errors in the IPA seem to be [-k] in places that should be [-?], e.g. lots of [-ok] endings which are impossible in Hokkien.
