Hi Sim, The grace said before meals you mentioned is a common one among the Holó Christians. Here is my transliteration: 感謝天父 Kám siā thinn pē 賞賜米糧 Siúnn sù bí niû Hō· 阮 (通) 吃 Hō· gún (thang) chiáh 靠主功勞, 心所願 Khò Chú kong-lô, sim só· guān . Line 1: 'Thank you Heavenly Father'. The pē is the vernacula...

Hi Mark, Unfortunately there are no hard rules to go by. It's mostly according to customary usage. For examples: 作 in literary reading is chok : chok-chiá 作者, chok-ka 作家, chok-phín 作品, but choh in vernacular reading: choh-chhân 作田, chèng-choh 種作. There is an excellent book published in Taiwan, 實用漢字台...

Also, would you kindly inform me of the authors (or compilers), publisher, and year of publication of the abridged version? And ISBN number, if...

Are the authors the same (马思周, 姜光辉) for both versions? I went to the Web site to search for the abridged ver...

I am interested in purchasing the dictionary you referred to, 简明东北方言词典. How and where can I buy one without going to China?

It was during the colonial era that the Japanese government in Taiwan adopted the kanji 高麗菜 for cabbage. Later, through the international trades, the name got spread to ot...

Because of my bandwidth limit in uploading the pictures, I have to select just these few pictures out of many. Hope you can vicariously join the crowd and have a good time. First is the p...
