The origin of Mandarin

Could anyone tell me the origin of this vocab "mandarin"?

Who invented it and what is the equivalent in Chinese?

I would say "Jin" (big city) is the Chinese word for it but it is called Jin because it was the language used by Ming n Qing dynasties.

How about before that ???
