I think above article is wrong because the sound of hanzi shang(up)is not the same with siung in minnan with siong for shang(up).Many minnan dict give shang(up) is most but not more in siung.see the dict in daiwanway.That explains why I heard taiwanese say siong

I find that there is an important word which malaysian always replace with cantonese -horny=hamsap.In daiwanway dict =chio ger .I find that this word could be use by us too=lo lad for thanks.I heard this word huad loe for prepare since I was a kid.
I read from newspaper today taht second best Badminton player from Malaya-Eddy Chong great grandfather was from Xiamen.So he and his family are among those few who are xiamen living in Penang,Malaysia.
I maybe wrong,there most used xiamen word in North malaysia is guan for tall 懸 which chuan and chiang are not the same.
