放水 pang chui as a meaning of purposely losing a game is added in above putonghua dict which is the first ever putonghua dict to do so? It is appeared in taiwan mandarin dict which could be an original minnan word.

Hi Hong

Thanks for the info. 汞 is mercury in Mandarin but I have never heard it in Hokkien, usually we say 水銀 sui2-gun5. We call silver color paint as 水銀漆 sui2-gun5-chat4.

Tahan sounds Malay to me although we also use it. I think 擋 tong3 is more appropriate.

Another word for 以為 (Mandarin: yi3wei2) in our dialect is 想講 siu*7-kong2. 我若准汝知影了 gua2 na7-cun2 ly2 cai1-ia*2 a0 = 我想講汝知影了 gua2 siu*7-kong2 ly2 cai1-ia*2 a0.

I also need to point out that in Medan we also use ngau1 and kau1 for "to hook".

Ngiau chi / niau chi and ngiau and niau are both used in Medan as well.

It is however hard for me to believe that most people in Medan are from Cuan Ciu. I maybe wrong but I know most Hokkienese in Medan are from around Lam Oa (Nan2 An1) and An Khui (An1 Qi2). There are people from Cuan Ciu but are definitely in minority - unless Lam Oa and An Khui are both in Cuan Ciu.

Also for this place, the young generation in Medan will use Ce4 Peng1 and the older generation will use Ce4 Tau1.

For that place, we will use Hi4 Peng1 and the older generation will use Hi4 Tau1.
