BTW, I just checked with a Malay native-speaker.

In the South of the Malay Peninsular, one always says "jambu bata" or "jambu air" for each to the two fruits respectively. In the North, "jambu" means "jambu batu" by default (but one can also say "jambu batu" of course), and one has to explicitly say "jambu air" when one means the latter fruit.

This corresponds completely to my usage, which makes sense, considering that Penang is in the North.

Jambu may have originally been an Indian Sanskrit word, but it most certainly is a perfectly normal every-day Malay word.

Hi Sim,

Thanks for being so considerate to explain the "$" ;-) Yes, you're right, I was not familiar with those terms ... or wouldn't admit it ;-) BTW: Did you get my last email?

Regards,
Aurelio

Yes, thank you very much. I've scanned some of the Penang Hokkien book for you, but haven't got my act together yet to write a reply... SORRY!

And I've been away for a week. Will write soon though.

Great,
