Penang Hokkien
Re: Penang Hokkien
malay word ayah is ayya from sanskrit means master. It is not from hokkien. You heard the word sukha could be just the reporter wanted to say su then follow by ka lai.......It is also from sanskrit. No china people are using them but the minnan online story by bansan nihowtw.com use malay words like tongkat ,huan na tongkat and agak-agak.Only these words I have heard he used but not people from taiwan. Although there are correct minnan words for it.He is telling the story in xiamen minnan.

Hi Sim
I agree with Hong on the possible name of your grandfather i.e. 李成貴 (li2-sing5-kui3, li3cheng2gui4 in Mandarin Pinyin). The possible for your grandmother's name is 陳清妙 (tan5-ching1-biau7, Mdr: chen2qing1miao4). 妙 biau7 means wonderful, beautiful, ingenious, etc. As you mentioned that in Penang Hokkien tone 7 & 3 are indistinguishable, I guess it's safe to assume that your biau3 is biau7.

Re: Penang Hokkien
It is not that penang hokkien as mentioned by andrew 3 and 7 mixed up.See this bookhttp://www.tw15in.com.tw/cgi-bin/clip/clip.cgi
It is very strange xiamen and chiang chiu are without 4 th tone compare to chuanchiu without 6th tone .I still cannot get enough books /articles for a complete understanding.I still cannot get the actual sound for chuanchiu word===si 死 which is a different pronunciation from chiangchiu and amoy.
Only teochew has all 8 tones for all min languages.

Re: Penang Hokkien
I think i know for sure where is the sound hami comes from
In LinBaoqing's papers from online(for sale too ) book.Only long hai uses a and sa(b)mi for what,so someone gradually add mi after that a .It changed to hami after some time.
other chiangchchiu like zhangbu uses sia he and nanqin la bi.
I think it is very nice to know that huian should sat to ta for where.ta is place.

Re: Penang Hokkien
Above I should type To Ta for huian for the meaning where.I don't know that taiwanese say to as a contraction is correct or not
Linbaoqing even said huian ,shishi, jinjiang and nanan are without 4 th tone .So just left 6 tones for these 4 sects. It has been changed to first and fifth tones.I read that there are people don't agree about this .

Re: Penang Hokkien
Hong, Tjandy, Niuc,
Thanks a lot for your help.
I spoke to my mother on the weekend, and she confirmed that my grandmother's name Beow was in fact 妙. Asking on the Forum wasn't a waste of time however, as they did not know most of the other characters.
So, for the first time in my life, I know the characters of my paternal grandparents' names, so that is a nice feeling! Thank you all.
Cheers,
Sim

Re: Penang Hokkien
This forum conducted a simple survey about Hokkien in Penang (the sample is too small though, only 18 people).

Could anyone tell me how come the first batch of Hokkien migrating to Penang were the Chiang Chiu but the subsequent were the Quan Zhou? Can I find any information about Hokkien migration to Penang history on the web?

Re: Penang Hokkien
chuanchiu people moving out a lot in last 100 years to south east asia because of financial problem.A web page given by me said yongchun has political problem with the government in china.
chiangchiu moving out to filiipina and kelantan 400 years ago but not recently in 100 years time. This is why there are so few chiangchiu in malaysia. And only longhai and longxi moving out but not changdai and zhangbu and yunxiao.
