I am from Singapore and do not speak Hokkein. I am trying to find out what does xu4 (Mandarin han yu pin yin; meaning = brillance of the rising sun) translate into for Hokkein. Thanks for your help.

Yes ,it is the same for most romanised spelling in both china and taiwan.Dict in the front page of this web site put hiok1 which is a mistype for hiok4 tone.

This really helps...now I can get on with chosing the my baby's name.
I also realised that I got the romanised speliing of my daughter's name wrong (but it's too late). I translated (pinyin) qiao3hui4 into chiao huey but I don't think it is too far off. Read somewhere that qiao3 should be khiaw. Is that right?
The problem I have is that hiok4 may be hard to pronounce and I am thinking of spelling it as York to simplify things. Are there any hard and fast rules about romanising Hokkein words?

娇 should be kiau (1st tone) .I think it is okay for york because we are not writing phd thesis on minnan.
Another spelling in taiwan is hiog for that k but I don't think it is nice.

You're right about being flexible. I just want my children to know their Hokkein roots and not discover later that their parents totally messed up.
Since Mandarin is the chinese language taught in Singapore, many Singaporeans keep the Hokkein surname and use Mandarin hanyu pinyin for the chinese name, eg Lee Qiaohui....which to me doesn't make sense. It used to be that you could guess fairly accurately which dialect group you orginiated from looking at your name.

It is so nice to know that you want to put minnan name in passport,etc.If I have a child,I will only pick minnan words with special consonant/vowel unlike putonghua.Like for boy 展 zhan in minnan is tian,juan 娟 in minnan kuan for girl.
Anyway some malaysian put wrong minnan sect for thier name like 发(fa)in chiangchiu/teochew is huak compare to chuanhchiu and amoy are huat.

I don't know you mean above yu4 is for boy or girl , it is in a middle of 3 words or what?But I think this hanzi 毓 yu4 is Iok8 in minnan will be a good choice too.In putonghua dict it is listed as a hanzi for name only .I will use it for my daughter in the middle of her name.

Actually, I want to give my son a minnan name cos as I grow older, I appreciate the complexity and beauty of the Chinese heritage. My husband, on the other hand, doesn't care.
