Classifiers Jeung and Faai - Please help!

Post by liz »

Dear All
I'm a 3rd year Psychology and Linguistics student, and I'm doing my project on bilingualEnglish and Cantonese childrens' acquisition of sortal classifiers. The research on the subject is a bit confusing - i am interested in the way children perceive objects and whether their perception influences their choice of classifier. Anyway the research describes Ji as meaning long and inflexible, tiu as long and flexible, lap as round and small/regular, gau as round and irregular. Then jeung is either described as flat and inflexible whilst faai is flat and flexible or in different papers the difference is that jeung is flat and thin, whilst faai is flat and very thin. I am wondering what the consensus is - which is a better description of jeung and faai?

I hope someone can tell me!!
Thank you for your attention - please email me in reply!
Best Wishes
