Hi Hong

For 免 we say bian2, 忙 bang5 but for [甭] we never say bang3 but mang1, short form of m3-thang1 [勿通] (do not).

niu,
I think you are rightabout mangas two heyin. There are no words in minnan with nang or ngang ,mong if I am no wrong.
If anyone say m+bian become mian ,then they maybe right as well. However book from china only listed m bian.I did hear radio saying m bian

Hi Hong

Yes, we also say m7-bian2 beside bian2. And the interesting thing here is that although m7 (not) and bian2 (no need) both are negative, m7-bian2 is still negative and basically is identical to bian2.

I just found out that one article already solved the problem of bang by Prof.Hsu of taiwan.
m+thang=bang or mng(no a between).I did send this article to niu six months ago.
2 interesting contractions
si+bo=sioo(right?) ending particle.
sio+kang=siang or sang ( same )

I think I have to explain that there couldn't be mian or mang in minnan because there are no consonant m,ng,n in this language. We have only 15 consonants.Syllabic consonants m and ng are not the same case.
m,ng,n in minnan appear as consonant mainly because of nn at the back to change it from b,g,l.
ng at the back like bang can't change to mang because ng is not in nucleus 韵腹position but it is in coda position.Words like lng become nng because ng in here is in nucleus position.
Teochew can have words like nang because it is 18 consonants langauge with extra consonant m,ng,n.

It is interesting that malay word Encik is from minnan ciangchiu 映ng2+叔 .ng2 is a prefix that can add that to many words for relative like ng2 hiann.See the ciangchiu web site
I was wrong about buaya because book said it was just malay bua plus minnan word a 仔
