I have not been here for too long. I am trying to retrace the old postings to refresh my memoryies. I came across your discussion about the word "伤" meaning "太". Hong was saying that in the program "阿宏上菜" this word was pronounced as "siong1".

In the Ciangciu accent, it is "siO*1" which sounds quite similar to "siong1" except without the "ng" at the end but with nasal tone instead. I have met many people from Taiwan who pronounced it as "siO*1" too.

I think the correct answer is taiwanese misuse the wendu for shang.In Porf.Li rulong's book there is mentioned siong/siang tang means too costly while siunn/sioonn tang means too heavy.
He didn't give more examples about when we should use wen du of shang but I am sure taiwanese use it wrongly.
ciangchiu sioonn doesn't sounded like siong at all.Just try the word Zhang张 in ciangchiu

I think many people in malaysia /singapore make mistake about ka-ki 家自(self) which is only xiamen.ciangchiu should be ka-ti,cuanchiu =kai-ki.datian=kah-tsi.putian=ka-i

At least six months ago sim asked about gam(suitable)used by hakka,cantonese and minnan/teochew.. Prof.Lii rulong and Prof.Lin lunlun( teochew expert)book say this word is not a chinese but could be from zhuang,etc.(this race is the one who invented the word lui for money).The ciangchiu web site also included this word as 吻合
I find this word is very minnan-like for suitable 四配 su-phue but it seems like only for people

Long time ago I was saying malaysian minnan in klang and some other parts saying phinn = cheap as wrong because I get reply from china saying it is siok and pan/pian gi
However, looking at the online dict we can find a baidu sound for 偏 phinn1 as xia and chuan sound(phenn for chiang)) meaning 佔便宜(favorable/adventageous)which could be another way of saying things we bought are cheap.I need to hear how people from china and taiwan construct sentences with it.

We also use 偏 phi*1 and 俗 siok8 = cheap.
物件真偏 mng7(mi8)-kia*7 cin1-phi*1 = 物件真俗 = things are cheap.
給人偏 ka7-lang5-pi*1 = 偏人 phi*1_lang0 = take advantage of other people.

Since Lim Kianhui didn't say people in china are using phinn for cheap,could it be we miusue this word from its only correct meaning of taking advantage of othe people?As long as poeple in china are using it as this thing is phinn,we are safe to use it..

I remember Lim only said 平价 as borrowed from mandarin but he is wrong because it is only phinn5 or pinn5 with no 1st tone
