Tone numbers

Post by Guest »

I have a question. You know the numbers after a tone, like WORD|53| or WORD|11|? What do those numbers represent? Is there any place where I could learn how to read them?

Strictly speaking this is a very tough question because in actual fact eact sect of minnan has his own style. That is called 五度制標調法.

The numbers represent the tone contour from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). For example, |44| is a high level tone, whereas |24| is a rising tone, |52| is a falling tone, etc.

So the first part is the starting level of the tone, the second part is the level the tone changes to?

Dylan Sung has a nice English page which deals with tones including a piece on the Chao's pitch representation.
