Been there... know that... done that...

Post by Mark Yong »

Another peculiar word in Minnan: 'bat'. Used either for 曾經 "been there before/done that before/etc" or for 認識. Though, I read somewhere that both characters are different - the first one is "八" and the second one is "捌" (or was it the other way around)? Also, the first one is high tone, the second one is mid-tone.

Okay, I know I am getting rusty at this...

bat and pat is the same 阴入。李如龙教授 thinks 八 is the benzi,动词=知晓,副词= 曾经。王建设教授 thinks 别 is the benzi 集韵=异也。本指事物有别,extend to 识别,认识。白居易 -应缘我是别茶人。郑谷- 别画能琴又解棋

林宝卿 also think it is 八。I think the benzi in shanggu period is 八。Later it is used as number。中国字例=八字本义为分,后世借用为数目 ,so people in Tang period use 别 in 说文解字 八=别也。
山中好处无人别。。。。a poem in Tang period.
捌 is same with 八.no point using it.

some people say it is 言+别 but I think the sound isn't right .It sounded like 鞭,便,辩。see kangxi dict.
