I read this forum every work day

Post by Eugene Morrow »

Everyone,
Mak Zai asked if anyone was still reading this forum.
I want to say that I look at this forum every workday (because my Internet connection is at work). I am learning Cantonese (as a hobby at home) and I read a lot of the English items. I appreciate the information I find here. I ignore only the stuff about writing because I have decided it is too hard for me to learn (I am learning only the spoken language). To me this forum is very much alive and well.
What about the rest of you? How many others take a look?

Hello Eugene and Everyone,
This is Mak Zai replying. I think it's pretty cool that your taking up the language. Cantonese is my personal favourite. I prefer it over Mandarin, even though I do speak better Mandarin.I think it's great that there's such a forum to discuss our common interest in Cantonese. Once I thought that learning to write Chinese would be the hardest thing possible, later I deceided to take the challenge. I find it very easy to remember Chinese characters now. At the beginning I do admit that it took some time, however once you get used to them,it's not that hard. I can now read and write both the simplified and the traditional Chinese characters, as well as the common colloquial Cantonese characters often used in magazines and the subtitles of Chow Sing Chi (周星馳) movies,etc...
Keep up the hard work. Cantonese is challenging, especially the tones. Another thing is that there's new slang words every month. What you learn now might seem old-school to certain Cantonese people. I guess the most important thing is that you can communicate with the Cantonese people.
Take care.

hi Eugene,
don't worry. just feel free to ask once in doubt. that is the only way to improve your cantonese. learning chinese (cantonese) as a hobby, do not push yourself too hard or it may eventually frighten you away:P frankly chinese characters are a bit too difficult to learn for most non-chinese (sometimes chinese find it hard as well:( ) so let's keep on flooding this forum with questions :)

I've only just found this forum.. will try to check on it every week.
I'm a Sydneysider too Pete. It's not a bad town for learning Cantonese I think - I tend to hear snippets of it at the supermarket and it's great to have 2 cantonese radio channels here. :)
