Checking the Hanzi for some basic Hokkien words

煙 is just ian1,no hun sound.
I remember mark and sim ask what is the hanzi for cang 5 in cuanciu,chiang mostly in xia/ciang,.Prof.Li says it is water radical on the left with 血 on top,豕 below.
we use this cang for cang ik,cui,etc.
chiong 1 is another hanzi 沖。not for shower.

note that 沖 in ciangciu is also chiong1.

I find that I can type the word ,just that hanzi in Prof.Li's book was printed wrongly.It is 潀=cong.

Hence the suggestion that cigarette (hun gi) is 薰枝 or 燻枝, where 薰 or 燻 stands for the tobacco or smoke in the cigarette, rather than 煙枝 or 菸枝 as Mark Yong originally thought.

see the book by Prof.Li on 薰。
香烟、烟丝、烟草都说薰,福州音 houng,莆田音hong,泉漳厦音hun,潮州和雷州hung.
厚薰,水薰,薰屎,薰油,薰丝,薰箬。烟卷儿闽东说薰囝,闽南说薰支。烟袋闽东说烟筒,闽南说薰吹。
菸草原产南美洲,明代闽人从菲律宾引进,初称淡巴菰,后称为薰。这是闽人用古语意译外来语的一例,故古籍未见用例,外地方言也未有此说,是闽语的特征词。

Ong, you could have *simply* replied "yes" to my original suggestion that tobacco is 薰. I thought you were disagreeing.

I am only trying to make the forum more intereting by typing out some articles..If you have some dict ,you won't be typing hun 7 in the first place.

As I said before, I merely quoted hun7 from Mark Yong's msg.

Are you saying everyone who posts in this forum should have a Hokien dictionary? Aren't you discouraging casual postings?

everyone minnan should buy some minnan dict,what is wrong about that?
