: please show me how to write the name "THanh in Catonese..thank you..and do you know any good websites to learn that language, especially those with sound support?..=)..thank you so much
"Thanh" looks like a Vietnamese name to me--is it?
If so, what does it mean? Are there any accent
marks or diacritics (e.g., vowel quality, tone)?
If its derived from Chinese, then one can look
up the Chinese character if given the pronunciation
and the meaning (unlike most other "Chinese name"
requests for English and other names, which are
just nonsensical and arbitrary transliterations).

Dear Thanh
I guess your surname is Vietnamese. Is it written Thanh, Thánh, or Thành? I don’t know if you can see the encoding or not. But try using Times or Times New Roman if possible. Using the VietNet convention for computer input it’s written Thanh, Tha’nh, or Tha`nh.
Note: This is Western European encoding.

Surname Character

Dear Thanh,
The above character is most likely your surname.
It is in gif form so that you can view it.
It has the following definitions: [1] completed; accomplished; finished; fixed; settled; [v] accomplish; succeed; complete [2] [v] achieve [3] [v] become [4] acceptable; all right [5] able; capable [6] one tenth [7] a Chinese family name
Other possibilities (depending on the tone for thanh as mentioned in Thomas’ post) could have been:
1. Thanh (These all have a Sino-Vietnamese pronunciation of Thanh):
清 (Mand: qing1, jing4, qing4; Cant: cing1) [1] clear; pure; clean [2] brief; scarce [3] virtuous; honest [4] [v] arrange; place in order [5] [v] conclude; terminate; repay (debts); settle [6] clear; simple and easily understandable [7] Ching dynasty (1644-1911) [8] [v] clean
聲 (Mand: sheng1; Cant: sing1, seng1) [1] [n] sound; voice; noise; tone [2]; music [3] [v] language; tongue [4] reputation; fame [5] [v] make known
錆 (Mand: qiang1; Cant: coeng1) the color of a mineral
青 (Mand: qing1, jing1; Cant: ceng1, cing1) [1] blue; green; black [2] green grass [3] not ripe [4] young; youth; youthful [5] the skin of bamboo [6] the white of an egg [7] short for Tsinghai province or Tsingtao [8] a Chinese family name [9] Kangxi radical 174;
2. Tha`nh (These all have a Sino-Vietnamese pronunciation of Tha`nh)
圣 (Mand: sheng4; Cant: sing3) simplified form of 聖 (the next character)
聖 (Mand: sheng4; Cant: sing3) [1] holy; sacred [2] [n] sage
3. Tha’nh (These all have a Sino-Vietnamese pronunciation of Tha’nh):
城 (Mand: cheng2; Cant: sing4) [1] [n] city; town; municipality [2] [n] castle; the walls of a city; to surround a city with walls
成 (Mand: cheng2; Cant: sing4) [1] completed; accomplished; finished; fixed; settled; [v] accomplish; succeed; complete [2] [v] achieve [3] [v] become [4] acceptable; all right [5] able; capable [6] one tenth [7] a Chinese family name
(Mand: cheng2; Cant: sing4) [1] sincere; honest; cordial; sincerity [2] true; real; truly; indeed; actually
There might be more characters with Sino-Vietnamese pronunciations of Thanh, Tha`nh, and Tha’nh, but, unfortunately, I don’t have a Han-Viet Tu Dien (Chinese-Vietnamese dictionary).
The above gif is most likely the character because it’s the only one that is a surname in Chinese.
I got these definitions from the dictionary at this web site, but, there was an error in one of the definitions for 青 (Mand: qing1, jing1; Cant: ceng1, cing1). Definition #6 made no sense so I corrected it.
