German and British Research Centers of Taiwanese Studies

Post by Chau H. Wu »

Hi All,

I would like to bring to your attention that at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, there is a research center devoted to the Taiwanese studies, called Research Unit on Taiwanese Culture and Literature. Its director is Dr. Henning Klöter. He has recently published a book on Written Taiwanese in the Studia Formosiana series, whose details are given below:

Klöter, Henning (2005)

Written Taiwanese

Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz Verlag.

ISSN 1612-572X ISBN 3-447-05093-4

"Written Taiwanese provides the first comprehensive account of the different ways in which Taiwanese (i.e., the Southern Min language of Taiwan) has been represented in written sources. The scope of the study ranges from early popular writings in closely related dialects to present-day forms of written Taiwanese. The study treats written Taiwanese both as a linguistic and as a socio-political phenomenon. The linguistic description focuses on the interrelation between written units and Taiwanese speech and covers various linguistic subfields, such as Taiwanese lexicography, phonology, and morphosyntax. The socio-political analysis explores the historical backgrounds which have led to different conventions in writing Taiwanese. The book is aimed at students and scholars with an interest in Taiwan’s language reform movements and a background in sociolinguistics, phonology, and lexicography." (Quoted from the Web page of the research center).

If you are interested in the scope of research and activities of the research center, please go to:

In addition, in the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), the University of London, there is a similar research center, Taiwan Studies Programme:

Hi Ong,

Oops! Pardon me. Originally I wanted to say something about the research centers in Germany and Britain, but got carried away about the book on Written Taiwanese, which Sim had discussed in this forum before and I forgot all about it. Sorry!

Ong,

You often come across as just a grumpy old man. Couldn't you try to be a bit more friendly on the forum?

I just wanted to say that I usually find your style grumpy. If someone asks an innocent question, you tell them off "I've already answered that", or "That's stupid" or some other remark that's far from friendly or pleasant. In my opinion, you often try to tell people *what* to post, and *how* to post.

Everyone else here either doesn't reply if they find a remark not particularly relevant, or they try and answer in an non-antagonistic manner. I don't know how many people you have put off from participating in this forum, but my own guess is that it's not insignificant.

To say that something somewhere else is worse than X is no justification for X. I have no desire to read horrible flame wars in other forums, so I don't go there.

Is that wrong to tell people that there are answers already in this forum?I don't think I used the word stupid directly to people .I just use the word< I think it is stupid>,that is a common phrase appear in anywhere in newspapers, etc.
I think you just can't find anything to post until you start talking about politeness or wrong post in the wrong topic. That is very sad.

I never said that was wrong. I was talking about the abrupt way you which you do it.

If I don't have anything to post, I keep silent, as I have many times in the past for many periods.

This was something significant which I have wanted to say for years. I have kept silent, out of respect for your (admittedly, great) knowledge (and out of a desire to avoid "unpleasantness" in what is otherwise a very nice forum), but I finally decided to speak out.

Every forum has it's abrupt people, I guess you're the one for this forum. And yes, BTW, I do agree with you, you are really nothing as bad as a lot of other people in other forums, if that's any consolation to you.
