Post by jilang »

I wanted to ask, how would I say the name of the animal "yabby" in Hokkien?

Thanks

Sorry, I don't quite get that.

Do you mean call it: Australian liong he? (which would be: ou jiu leng he)
or do you mean when you're in australia call it: liong he?

And by liong he are you referring to leng5 he7 because that means lobster, not yabby.

I have never seen a yabby; but if it's crayfish, in Singapore they call it 蝦婆 he5-po5. There is another similar creature but more rectangular that we call 蝦猴 he5-kau5, which I have never found in Singapore so far.

Just found some pictures of yabby at http://www.nativefish.asn.au/yabby.html and http://www.blueyabby.com/en/ and it looks quite different from he5-po5 "crayfish" in Singapore, so I don't think we can call it he5-po5.

I think this yabby picture shows it quite well: http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgu ... l%26sa%3DN

Could it be that because they're Australian there hasn't been a word for it yet?
