How is this written in POJ?

Post by jilang »

Hi

I was looking in Wikipedia's article in POJ and I couldn't find a single way to write an "er" sound such as "pher" meaning skin or "her" meaning light in POJ. If I were to write correct POJ how would I write it (I don't want to use just the letter "e" because that is not the same sound as "er" in my varient)?

Thanks

Also, why is it that "lok8" has a 'oo' sound and yet in POJ the 'o' isn't written with a dot?

Hi Jilang

Skin is also pher5 in my variant. POJ is designed for Amoy (E7-mng5) variant that doesn't have "er" sound ["er" is merged with "e" in Amoy]. So I think we can still write it as "er" to differentiate it from "e".

The letter "o" in "lok8" doesn't need a dot because the combination "-ok" is only possible with "o`" and never with "o".

Thanks niuc!

An idea I thought up is to write "er" as "e" with the dot used to properly write "oo" in POJ.

Does this mean that in Taiwanese Hokkien they don't have "er" either? because I thought POJ was used in Taiwan as well.

With the "oo", I'm assuming it's also the case in "ong" and all those other ones.

Thanks agian for your help.
