Re: The word for "kite"
In a book I bought last month, 鹞 is the hanzi for thai word waau. The book is called 汉泰语关系词的时间层次。It is a phd thesis by 龚群虎SimL wrote:When growing up in Penang, the only word I knew for "kite" was "au5". I haven't been able to find this word in Douglas/Barclay. The word in Douglas is "hong1-che1" (non-sandhi tones).
My mother said that "au5" is known in the south of the Malaysian peninsular, but is more common in the north. The usual word in the south is indeed "hong1-che1".
Does anyone know the character for "au5"?

Thanks for this information.ong wrote:In a book I bought last month, 鹞 is the hanzi for thai word waau. The book is called 汉泰语关系词的时间层次。It is a phd thesis by 龚群虎
mdgb gives "sparrow hawk", scientific name "Accipiter nisus" for 鹞. Could be borrowed from the name of the bird to indicate the object.
Here is a photograph of a 白头鹞
http://baike.baidu.com/view/32855.htm.
It's not surprising that the same word is used for both a large bird of prey and the object. English "kite" also means these two things:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kite_%28bird%29 (bird of prey)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kite (object)
In fact, I see from the Wikipedia disambiguation page for "kite" that the bird is "one of many species of bird of prey in the family Accipitridae", which I guess ties in with the "Accipiter nisus".
translate to english pls . :)
