Hello,
I am Elmer, new in this newsgroup. On an old grave I found the name of one of my ancestors.
His name was written as 李滄濤. Does anybody know how this is pronunicated in Hokkian?
regards,
Elmer
how to pronunciate 李滄濤
Hey Elmer,
I'm Chinese, living in the Netherlands too. Are you into researching family history? Is that why you asked the question about the tomb inscription?
I have been doing family history research for the last 7 years. Will be asking duaaagiii's help soon in two tomb inscriptions too!
Best regards,
Sim.

Hi Steve,
Isn't it amazing that there are 3 guys in the Netherlands with a Hokkien background, all doing family research and communicating on the Minnan Forum!
Hope your research is going well. Mine is going JUST GREAT!
On my latest trip to Malaysia I took photographs of about 15 grave inscriptions! Fortunately most of them are quite modern (from 1970's onwards), and well maintained, so I'm able to decipher them myself. There are only 2-3 very old ones, which I will seek help for.
Regards, and Happy New Year to you and all the other Forum readers.

Hey SimL,
In November last year I was visiting my home country, Indonesia. I visited 10 graveyards. Taken so many photo's but didn't dare to ask here otherwise duaaagiii can gat crazy due to my question hehehe.
My oldest gravestone was from 1884.
I am now inputing my collection of family trees I have into a database which is now round 34.000 names. Too bad no people around Jombang. Otherwise I might can help Elmer.
Elmer, I saw your email also in mailing list Budaya Tionghua. Too bad there is no answer there, but I can't help you either. My relation are mostly coming from West and Central Java and just a small portion are from East Java (around city of Kediri and Madiun).
For your information, there is a name of Lie Tjiang Hok (Luitenant der Chinezen te Djombang from 1906 to 1917) and Lie Tjwan Khing (Luitenant der Chinezen te Djombang from 1921 to 1935). Are they your ancestors ?

Steve Haryono

I know the feeling well, Steve. In general one can safely say that the amount of Chinese text that any arbitrary non-native Chinese speaker would like to ask a native Chinese speaker to translate is always many times greater that the patience of any native Chinese speaker!hays wrote:...
