On the back of an old painting there is some Hokkien text. The portret is of a young boy in Indonesia. His name is on the left site, top down. This is how much I can read.....
The familie uses Hokkien for names, etc.
Could anyone help me to translate this. I'm also ver much interested how to pronouce the familie name: 余
Hokkien text and family name on a painting
Re: Hokkien text and family name on a painting
Wow! This person is certainly lucky to have Mr. Lee Man Fong (1913-1988), one of the most famous Indonesian (and South-east Asian) artists to paint a portrait for him when he was ten years old. In the portrait, the boy's name is "I5 Po2 Giok8" (the Inonesian spelling might be: Ie Po Giok) and the portrait was painted in Spring 1944.

Re: Hokkien text and family name on a painting
Thanks Casey,
I heard that he was indeed the painter! And the name of the boy is also what I know!
Now I know that the painter put his name also on the back of the painting and a date. Thank you very much!
Is it possible for you or someone else on the forum to type the text over and translate the exact text on the back??
I that way I can learn how to read this text.

I just came across your message as I was in a hurry when making my previous reply. Your have asked for the translation of those wordings and here it is.
The handwritings show:
In simplified characters (Jianti):
余允让令公子 画像
民国卅三年春日 曼峰作于爪哇巴城
此为
余宝玉君肖像 时年十岁
or
in original characters (fanti):
余允讓令公子 畫像
民國卅三年春日 曼峰作於爪哇巴城
此為
余寶玉君肖像 時年十歲
The translation:
First line
U5 Un2 Jiong7 leng7 kong1 cu2 ui7 siong7
Oe Oen Djiong’s son’s portrait
(Note: “leng7 kong1 cu2” means “son” in an honorific way)
Second line
Bin5 Kok4 sam1 sa*1 ni5 chun1 jit8 Ban7 Hong1 chok4 u5 Jiao2 Ua1 Ba1 Sian5
Republic of China 33rd year (i.e., 1944) spring Man Fong did in Batavia Java (now Jakarta)
(Note: Bin Kok calendar year system was used during the Kuomintang period of the Republic of China. It is still being used in Taiwan. The difference between Bin Kok system and the international solar year system is 11 years. The Repulic of China was established in the year of 1912.)
Third line
Chu2 ui5
This is
Fourth line
U5 Po2 Giok8 kun1 siao1 siong7 si5 ni5 cap8 he3 (hue3)
Master Oe Po Giok’s portrait time 10 years old.
(Note: “siao siong” indicates that the person at the time of portrait being drawn is alive. This to differentiate it from “I siong” or “ui siong” 遺像means the person in the portrait is not alive.)
Hope the above will now clear your doubt.
