Introductions and a Taiwanese iPhone/iTouch app

Post by geneko »

Hi. My name is Gene and I'm new to this board. I hope the nature of this post is appropriate under the rules of this forum. If not, please let me know and I'll gladly remove it.
I'm posting here because I've recently posted a Taiwanese audio phrasebook application named, "Taiwanese", to the iTunes app store. No, I'm not fluent in Taiwanese and I've been frustrated and discouraged with the lack of books and materials available for learning Taiwanese. Fortunately, my parents grew up in Taiwan and speak it well. The voices you'll hear speaking Taiwanese in my app are those of mom and dad! I've also studied Mandarin in college and also happen to have many years of software development experience. Though iPhone programming is new to me, with a little help from my parents, a Taiwanese language phrase app seemed like a good first project to tackle. In addition to helping me learn some Taiwanese, I'm hoping that it'll also cover some of the costs of the developer program, and maybe even pay some bills some day.
So, yes, this is, in part, a plug to sell my iPhone app, but I'm also hoping to get some constructive feedback from those who are willing to buy and use the app. For example, what kind of words or phrases should be added? Are there any translations that are less than accurate? I am planning some additions to the app and I'll gladly consider constructive feedback, but please keep in mind that maintaining this app is not my full time job and that the speed at which I can release updates is partially limited by app submission and approval process Apple has in place.
More information regarding the app is available in iTunes. The initial version has many phrases that center around tourism and traveling but also cover some other basic topics. I hope to broaden this scope over time if sales of the app justify the investment in time required. You can either type http://www.iTunes.com/app/Taiwanese into your browser for a link that will open in iTunes, or search for "Taiwanese Gene Ko" within the iTunes app store to locate the app.
If you do happen to try the app, please let me know what you think. Thanks for your time.

- Gene

Well, an updated version of the "Taiwanese" app with some usability enhancements and a few more recorded phrases is now available in the iTunes store. Going forward, I'll have more information available on http://genesapps.blogspot.com/.
Thanks - Gene
