actually, ma ma hu hu is not a slang but a die2 ci (叠词）（sorry，dun know the english word for this). there r so many phrases like this, such as ping2ping2 an1an1（平平安安），po4po4 lan4lan4(破破烂烂），jia1jia1hu4hu4 家家户户..... etc.

Same thing happens to cat in China, 咪咪 can be cat, or something you know. But it's somewhere different from what cat can mean in English.
