Singaporean Hokkien

Hi all,

Has anyone heard of or seen this book?

"新加坡闽南话俗语歌谣选"

There are hundreds of hits on the internet, but this one shows a clear photograph of it:

As a result of the text accompanying the photo on the above link, I found:

This is way too much Chinese text for me to do anything but get a very quick impression of what's going on, but it looks as if this is more "evidence" of a Hokkien revival of sorts in Singapore.

I saw that book in China a few years back, and was very stupid in not buying it when I did. There are two books in the series, and the other one is a linguistic description of Singapore Hokkien. I can't remember the name, though.

Ah, now I see the cover I think it was reprinted in China, as the cover looks a bit different to the one I remember.

There was also a 新加坡閩南話詞典 also republished in China I think. I saw it in Amoy university library, and made a few notes from it. All of the books are actaully listed on this site:

But the dictionary is out of print and the link to 新加坡閩南話概要 (the one I mentioned above) doesn't work. At least we know where to find them if they come back into print though.

Not really. It was about Hokkien customs, cuisine and songs etc, but not Hokkien language. In fact on page 12 is a language lesson, which is Mandarin (to English) and nothing about Hokkien.

You're most welcome. No need to apologise, as you did no wrong. I didn't read all, just browsed through and sadly found nothing about revival of Hokkien language in Singapore. Hope that it will be in Taiwan & PRC... if so, usually Singapore will follow the trend.
