Thank you for the information! That's interesting! I know about the noun-verb thing but not the tonal difference. I suppose the tonal difference is lost in Mandarin and Hokkien, or is it not? Could you help to give the romanization with tones of " 君君、臣臣、父父、子子 " ? Which Chinese languages still preserve this?

I offer these two examples from Hokkien, but with my limited knowledge, I've no idea if they are part of the same phenomenon. I have been racking my brains to think of more of them, but these are the only two I could think of.

I'd be very grateful if anyone could confirm or deny that these two are also part of the same phenomenon.

釘 teng1 = a nail; teng3 = to nail
種 ceng2 = a seed, species, "race"; ceng3 = to sow, plant (seeds, plants, etc)

Thank you. Yes, they are. 釘 can be 'ting1/ting3' (literary) or 'tan1/tan3' (colloquial, preferred in my variant). 種 can also be pronounced as 'ciong2' (type, kind).

When I visit my parents later this year, I'll call up your pages, and show these to her. I'll have to check my notes again, but I seem to remember her telling me that "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" was one of her mother's favourite hymns.
