Swatow
Re: Swatow
: Swatow is Shantou in ChaoZhou.
shipwreck Witte Leeuw. It is a misleading name as the exact kilns where it was made still are still not identified but they were probably located in the vicinity of what was formerly the port of Swatow now called Shantou on the northern coast of Guandong. During the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century much of this ware was exported along the Southeast Asian trade routes. The Dutch distinguished between fine porcelain and this coarse porcelain as early as 1596. While it was traded during the first decades of the 17th century, only small quantities were taken back to the Netherlands. Dating of Swatow is vague; late 15th century to about 1700.

Re: Swatow
: Does anybody know what modern city the old name Swatow refers to in China? I've come across the name a lot but can never find it on a map. Thanks.
"Whampoa", I believe, is the old name of Swatow on the southern coastal region of China.
But you have probably already gotten this by now.
Cheers.

Swatow is an city of permanent inhabitants of west coastal region of china....Swatow, a city significant in 19th-century Chinese history as one of the treaty ports established for Western trade and contact, was one of the original Special Economic Zones of the People's Republic of China established in the 1980s, but failed to blossom like other cities......
