Translating Chinese Name to Hokkien
Re: Translating Chinese Name to Hokkien
Hi lpong:
It must be from a poetry...... ^_^
《孔融詩》玟璇隱曜,美玉韜光。
王玟璇 = Ong Bun Suan or Ong Boon Suan - normally people in Malaysia spell as Boon......
玟 can be pronounced Bin as well. It's more common as Bun / Boon though.

Re: Translating Chinese Name to Hokkien
Hi lpong:
You're most welcome. Both Ong Boon Suan or Ong Bin Suan are OK. If you refer to 《康熙字典》, both are indicated as jade. If you want to hear some advice from "real" Hokkiens from China, let me bring this to my forum and let you know by tonight.
Regards,
aokh1979

Re: Translating Chinese Name to Hokkien
It is better to pronounce 玟 as Boon due to the 文 character.lpong wrote: can someone please confirm? because I need to go on Thursday to register my baby girl name.

Ong Boon Suan is the best for westernised chinese.
Bun would be pronounced as Ban in western countries although romanisation wise it is the best.
Re: Translating Chinese Name to Hokkien
Hi lpong:
I shared with a group of friends in my Hokkien forum in China, including Teochews, they think Boon / Bun makes more sense. It is more accepted and more reasonable since today, even when people read it in Mandarin, it will be Wen instead of Min. Ong Boon Suan is a pretty name for your baby girl. Congratulations !
