Cantonese community in Taiwan
Re: Cantonese community in Taiwan
Matt,
I learned (and continue to learn) from my good female friend who was born in Guangzhou and moved to S.F. Cali about 5 years ago. I am far from being fluent with either dialect, but I continue on. She feels very special knowing that I want to learn her language and culture. Basically, she will teach me words based on where we are (a restaurant, for example) and then I will construct sentences with that new vocab. My 2 year progress is slow because I am in Indiana and she is in Cali.
What about yourself? Where did you learn Cantonese. Are you fluent, how many years, etc.?
Tavis

Travis,
That is great. Keep up the effort...I assume you don't get much opportunity to speak Cantonese in Indiana??? I lived in Hong Kong from 92 to 94....so I have been studying Cantonese for about 10 years now. After returning from Hong Kong I received a B.A. degree in Mandarin. I am with you in that I prefer speaking Cantonese over Mandarin.

Gentlemen,
Tavis Allen, James Campbell, Thomas Chan, Matt McGee,
I have been reading and enjoying your conversations. They have been informative and motivating for me. I have been studying Mandarin and more recently Cantonese for about 1 year. I use tapes, books, Chinese language movies and even a Chinese language radio station. Here in the New York City Cantonese is far more widely spoken. I live outside the city but work there. I have a long way to go but it is a lot of fun to learn!

Travis,
Thanks for your post. I am new to this site, however I think that it is a great forum to express ideas concerning the Cantonese language as well as sharing information on learning methodologies. Being a caucasian, I am always fascinated with people who have a desire to learn the language.
