Shore of Pearls - Hainanese Heritage

Post by Ah-bin »

I've just found out that the best book ever written (to my knowledge) about the early history of Hainan, Edward. Schafer's "Shore of Pearls" has been republished this year by Floating World Editions. I have mentioned it before somewhere earlier.

Anyone with Hainanese heritage should get hold of this book. Schafer writes beautifully and puts modern Chinese scholars to shame with the depth of his reading and meticulous scholarship.

I wish it was better known amongst the English-speaking Hainanese in the world.

I think a different compay has reprinted his "Empire of MIn" too. I have seen one or two good books on Min in Chinese in the past too.

Anyway, I've just ordered my copy from the book depository - it's cheaper than Amazon because you don't have to pay for the postage.

Book depository sī Eng-kok ê báng-chiāuⁿ chhe•h-tiàm

http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/

Bô siâng-kā Amazon in-ūi kià chhe•h kàu gōa-kok sī miān hō• i-lâng lui ê.

Actually I was trying to think of a way to express this in Hokkien

"It's different from Amazon because they don't charge for postage overseas."

But I'm not sure if what I wrote is good Hokkien or not. I tried to write "you don't have to pay them" instead.

Siūⁿ bē kàu ná ē ū ciahni̍h cán ê ho̍kbū! And they have books in Spanish, Portuguese, etc. too. Thanks to Ah-bin for mentioning it.

I would say,

"In kah Ámasān bô kâng, iûhùi coân sèkài biáncîⁿ."

There should be a more satisfying word than iûhùi. Wonder what they say in Bagan or Penang or old Singapore?
