"in substitution"

Post by diane »

I looked up the word "substitute for" which in mandarin is "ti dai" or in Cantonese would be "tai doi" . Do cantonese people use "tai doi" colloquially or do they use another word for the word "substitute" such as in the example... "I drank milk as a substitute for ice cream." How would you use that?

I guess this question also relates to how one would say "instead of" since "substitute" is similar to "instead of". How wuld you say, for example, "I drank water instead of soda." or "I went out with Her instead of You."

Thanks...:)
