Salut!

I have recently placed some Hakka dialogues for a type of Meixian dialect in my website at

http://www.sungwh.freeserve.co.uk/hakga/h-dialogues.htm

which may help you, if you also know English. I'm afraid my french isn't very good so if you have feedback or questions, I can only answer you in English.

Cheers,
Dyl.

Dylan,

Good work on that page, although your IPA is not displaying correctly through Unicode.

I think it would help to put the tone contours on each of the words, rather than the tone numbers, including sandhi so that it makes it easier for the reader to know the pronunciation. It would also make it better if you write everything in IPA, as I have done on my sites. This is the way most linguists transcribe.

Hi James,

Thanks for the feedback. IPA sometimes poses a problem for readers, since many folks don't actually have those fonts available on their computers, and even if they do have IPA fonts, they may not be unicode compliant. I will try and sort out the IPA using gif based characters instead.

Cheers,

Dylan,

I don't use any IPA fonts on my website (<www.glossika.com/en/dict/lang.htm>), all the IPA is in Unicode. I have found that as long as the Unicode font is on a computer, there shouldn't be trouble reading the fonts. I have found only one computer in our office that has Unicode and can't display correctly, but this is a problem with the computer's settings that I can't figure out. Generally, most computers won't have that problem.

You used some characters on your site that show up as boxes on my computer. I don't know if they're supposed to be IPA or what, but they display correctly. Yet, I check the page is set in UTF-8, so I don't know why.

By the way, have you figured out the problems with the Vietnamese tones listed on your site? I make mention of it on my site at the end of the tutorial page.

Ganbei,

Hi James,

I've been busy elsewhere of late, and had not come around to updating the page on Vietnamese tones until today. You might want to visit my page again, and then reconsider the tone contours you have.

http://www.sungwh.freeserve.co.uk/flux/vietnam.htm

I think my tone contour transcription of the tones after listening to the sound files found in the two new links are as correct as I can manage. I notice that your hoi tone is somewhat different, since the glottalisation seems to appear in the middle of the pronunciation of a word in that tone, not at the end. I find also, that the nga tone is similar to the hoi tone, but the nga tone ends in a much higher pitch after the glottalisation. The bang/ngang tone is slightly higher than mid level. I would have placed it at around /44/, myself. The third new link is I think the most helpful. Since you have some knowledge of Taiwanese/Holo, I think you may get most use out of it than I can.

Cheers,
Dyl.
