It means the geographical area south of China. Nam = south, and yeung = foreign.

By extension, dung-yeung refers to east of China, ie. Japan, so a dungyeungyan is a person from Japan.

Saiyeung refers to the west, therefore saiyeungyan is a westerner.

I've not herd of bak-yeung (where bak refers to north), but I've not been around that much...

i thought yeung meant "ocean"
nam yeung actually means "south ocean" namely the area of Southeast Asia.

yeung came to mean foreigner since the foreigners came across the ocean.

南洋 also refers to the Malay Archipelago in general, and, in particular, the island of Singapore (叻埠).

Dear Gar,

I think it's not proper to pollute here with foul language, but if you want to know it, try to consider the pronounciation of nam.
