Re: i want to know hakka people in scotland/uk/the world
Dear Hans,
I read with great interest your message to Matt. I am also a Hakka ngin from Belinyu-Bangka (Indonesia). I left Indonesia to go to Germany in 1965 (Before you were born). I lived in Belinyu until I finished my Junior high school (SMP St. Joseph) and went to Jakarta to attend Senior High School (SMA Kanisius). I have visited your town, Sungai Liat many times during my time in Bangka. I have always enjoyed our school trips to pantai Matras and the downtown area. In fact, I also have to take my six grade (elementary school) final examen in Sungai Liat. I remembered that I stayed overnight in my uncle house with one of my school's friend. Later, I went back there often, because my brother and his family lived there for few years. He worked at the state company Tambang Timah Bangka (I think that the company is gone)
I received my Ph. D. degree in Chemistry at The Universitaet Tuebingen, germany. The time in Germany was a great experience for me. Unfortunately, there were no Hakka ngin in Tuebingen at that time. The only time I have the chance to speak Hakka ("Belinyu" dialect) was when I went to Holland to visit my older sister who lived in Delft. Later on, when my parent came from Indonesia to visit me, then I spoke Hakka to them. They did tell me where my ancestors came from, but I forget the exact name of the place/province in China.
You mentioned that you were born in Sungai Liat. How long did you lived there? Are you still speak Hakka within your family? Do you have a chinese name? I will be glad if I could hear from you!
Best regards,
Siong Tjoeng

Re: i want to know hakka people in scotland/uk/the world
Dear Siong Tjoeng,
it is much more great interest for me to have your reply email on mine. I never thought that Hakka ngin from Belinyu will be dispersing to Tuebingen Germany in Europe as you do now. It is really an Hakka ngin traits dare to face new frontier anyway away in the world.
My Hakka name is Tjin Liong , from the familiy name of Phan. Now i am 37 years old.I also visited your town many times when i was in senior high school during my regular visit all over Bangka island for marching band perfomance during 1984-1987.
I believe that you arlready much away from Bangka island. TTB you mentioned has already gone as a private company and annexed by Indonesian Government long time ago some times in 1990-s fprior to Indonesia crisis.
Siong Tjoeng,
How is your family? How many kids do you have ? Are you still speaking Hakka with them ?
I have 2 kids, 1 doughter 5 years old, and 1 son 3 three years old. My wife is originally coming from Pontianak-Khun Thien. She is coming also from Hakka family in remote Sintang. My wife now is speaking Hakka daily with my kids .
As you know that Liat Kong young generation as i am ,do not speak Hakka fluently compared to Belijong Ngin like you are. Your Hakka is much more a better one i supposed.
Siong Tjoeng,
If you like music, please try to find ATOK from taiwan. he is a hakka folksong singer. I have 3 cd albums of him. He sang Hakka very nice.
I hope that we could write each other then. I am now gathering any information about Chinese Diaspora especially about Hakka tribe in the world.
It is really a great pleasure to have your reply.
