Fujian dialect - formal name?

Post by Tom »

Hi,

What is the formal name for the language they speak in Fuzhou, Capital of Fujian? I would like to learn this language. I am an american and I speak Mandarin. Does anyone know of any resources in English or Mandarin for learning Fozhou dialect? What is the name for it? is it Hikka? Please respond to my email: tch3@aol.com.

The term is Minnan, or Hokkien.

Fuzhou dialect is not of Minnan/Hokkien (Southern Min) http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=CFR .
Some say it's Mindong (Eastern Min) http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=CDO .
Some say it's Minbei (Northern Min) http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=MNP .

Note that the term Hokchew (listed in Minbei) is actually the same with Fuzhou (listed in Mindong). Hokchew is the Minnan pronunciation for Fuzhou (Mandarin pronunciation).

May be it's better just call it Fuzhou language/dialect.
