Please ignore the 'Korean invented Chinese language" thread

Post by Aurelio »

Dear all:

I guess there aren't more than 2 people on this forum who actually enjoy this recurring nonsense about Chinese/ Chinese characters being invented by Korean (or whoever).

Without wanting to hijack everybody's opinion, I'd like to suggest that this thread be allowed to rest in peace until it disappears from the front page of this forum, hopefully never to come back again.

In other words - however much annoyed you are by this nonsense - DON'T WRITE BACK, or this silly threat will continue for ever and offend our intelligence!

Best regards,
Aurelio

The thread which originated after its appearance on the soc.culture.korean and soc.culture.china spilled over into sci.lang where I usually can be found. The thread does have its roots in a webpage written by a certain Sukgeun Jung who is an estuarine marine biology student. Many people joined the thread, and the points were argued over and over again.

SJ is did not have a linguistic background when he began arguing about the origins of Chinese, and all his mistakes were pointed out in a thorough way by the linguistics and other lay people there. In the end it boiled down to the fact that no biological evidence links Shang people with Koreans, and so the argument then moved onto the monosyllabicity of the pronunciation of Chinese characters. In the end, he left due to the barrage of criticism about his understanding of Chinese pronunciations. He didn't even know how to pronounced Chinese, and yet he criticised the pronunciation as though he was an expert.

The thread has finished for over two months now, and I also agree with Aurelio that it should stop, since there is no more useful arguments which could be added which haven't already been discussed.

You can look up the thread here
