I am currently undertaking a research project trying to find out what noise dogs make in each language of the world.
In English it is 'woof' and in French it is 'ouah' and here in the czech republic it is 'haf'... so I was hoping somebody might spare a minute to tell me what sound dogs make in the cantonese language?

what do dogs say in cantonese?
Re: what do dogs say in cantonese?
"wong6wong6..." is the noise made by dogs. And we call the noise as fai6.
Re: what do dogs say in cantonese?
In Hong Kong, we do name animals with the sound they make. For cat, we may call them "miao miao". For dog, we may call it "wow wow". That's may be because some english-speaker would say "bow-wow" for a dog's yap.
Re: what do dogs say in cantonese?
While reading a children's English/Chinese book I came across the following characters for translations of sounds that animals were making, so I looked them up in a Mandarin dictionary:
嘎嘎 (duck "quack") : Pinyin: ga1; Jyutping: gaa1
哞 (cow "moo") : Pinyin: mou1; Jyutping: mau1
咩 (sheep "baa") : Pinyin: mie1; Jyutping: me1
咯咯 (chicken "cluck") : Pinyin: ge1; Jyutping: gaak3
(sorry, no dog)
The Cantonese Jyutping conversion is just from a database; I haven't found them in a Cantonese dictionary (except for 咩).
Questions:
Do Cantonese parents and children use these same (dialect translated) onomatapoeic sounds, or do the above only apply in Mandarin?
Can you please provide any other animal sounds?
Regards,
rathpy

Re: what do dogs say in cantonese?
I've always heard the children say "woo woo woo" for dogs.

Re: what do dogs say in cantonese?
Here in Hong Kong, people think the noise dogs make is "wo1 wo1"(wo pronounced with high level), which is also used as 'baby talk' to refer to dogs in general.
Re: what do dogs say in cantonese?
Correction and addition to my previous message:
Dog: "wou1 wou1" (w+ou high level)
Cat: "miu1 miu1" or "miau1 miau1"
Hen: "gok4 gok2"
Interestingly a lot of these are not found in the normal Cantonese syllabary.
