If you want to learn Mandarin slang, I suggest you read "Outrageous Chinese" by James J. Wang.

I will warn you, though, that this book does contain info. relating to words of slang and somewhat dirty and sexual nature. But, in my opinion, this can be vital information. It's a very good book.

I would have to agree. That is a great book, but the title is a bit misleading because there is quite a bit of really useful info in there. Yes, you get the cussing and the sexual conotations, but there is medical and police stuff too.

Hi James,

Isn't ye4 dian4 an old word for a "nite spot" - there's a Shanghainese movie from the 1930's by that title... interesting to hear that punters are using it again - is that in TW ?

ye dian was used a long time ago.

some slangs:
qi guan yan(气管炎---妻管严, hen-pecked)

shang huo(上火, getting heaty, especially for eating too much deep fried food)

yu men(郁闷，feeling down, feeling blue, under stress)

shua/da tai ji (耍/打太极，to play taichi boxing, meaning shifting responsibility)

pai dui(排队， to queue up, extended to traffic jams nowadays)

gao xiao(搞笑，humourous or funny. 'gao' usually used by cantonese so this is probably of a cantonese origin)
