Need casette advice

Post by Kyle »

I have no background in Cantonese at all, but want to learn how to speak it. I don't want at the moment to become completely fluent, but at least have a good understanding of the language. I think the best way to go is tapes, so I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to what is the best brand to get, and for a reasonable price. Please email me at kioe_85@hotmail.com
Thanks!

Kyle,
You can see some information on tape courses that I put on this forum: look at a message "Learning Cantonese" sent by arnistkdokid on Sept 16, 2001 and my reply called "Tape Courses" the next day.
I recommend starting with the Pimsleur course, to see if you really enjoy learning. It's easy. If you still want to learn more, you should get the FSI courses. I now think they take about 400 hours to complete.
I am at lesson 22 of 30 in the FSI tape course. I will need more fluency work when I have finished. I can already pick up bits when I hear Cantonese people talking, and I can say a few small things.
I really love it, and I am sure I will get there: I started in February 2001 and I think by the end of 2002 I will speak Cantonese fluently, and I may be able to do it sooner. I cannot write Chinese characters and I don't want to try - I will be really happy talking to all my Cantonese friends, and visiting Hong Kong again.
Good luck,
