New Year Greetings
Re: New Year Greetings
teochew bcame part of the chinese empire when qin shihuang conquered canton area some 2200 yrs ago. it was under the jurisdiction of hainan prefecture. 111bc, han dynasty, a 'jieyang'(ghek yioh, 揭阳, simplified chinese fonts) county was established. its the earliest govt establishment in the history of teochew. 331ad, jin dynasty, hainan prefecture was further divided into hainan and donggong prefecture, jieyang was replaced by 4 other counties: haiyang, chaoyang, sui'an, and haining(海阳,潮阳,绥安,海宁). 413 ad, again jin dynasty, part of donggong prefecture was dvided and formed yi'an(义安) county. this is the beginning of teochew.
591 ad, sui dynasty. sui abolished the refecture system and used the province system nationwide. under the notion of 'tides coming in and retreating' this area was given the name of chaozhou, or teochew(潮州,meaning the 'prefecture of the tides'). 607ad, name was changed to yi'an prefecture. but changed back to chaozhou in 621ad, tang dynasty. 742ad, tang dynasty, changed to chaoyang prefecture, 758ad, still tang dynaty, changed to chaozhou and had been so ever since.

Re: New Year Greetings
I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to say "Happy New Year" in Teochew (Chaozhou, Amoy, Swatou, Chiuchow or whatever). I am from Thailand and part Teochew, but even though they make up 12% of the population, few ethnic Chinese speak Chinese (or consider themselves Chinese). I overheard some older people saying something along the lines of "Sin Ngi Wat Chai." I know there is no official romanisation, but does anybody know how to greet the New Year in Teochew?
Oh well. Xin Nian Quai Le ~ Gong He Fa Cai!

Re: New Year Greetings
In Taiwanese (Amoy) pronunciation, it's "shin ren kwai lo." (Note: I do not know any Minnan romanization, so it may be inaccurate."

Re: New Year Greetings
Sin Ngi Wat Chai is a bit wrong... maybe u heard wrongly. suppose to pronounce as Sing Ni Huak Chai. (i am from malaysia, i am a teochew too.)Sing Ni Huak Chai means to have a prosperous new year~!
i am glad to hear that there is still younger generation in thailand that still interested in chinese language/dialect.
in fact, most chinese in other country have bad impression on thailand's chinese as they do not respect their own culture and language. they just let it diminish. everyone speak thai to their children. so, not much young chinese know their mother language anymore.
