I have searched around and there are two books which seem to provide quite comprehensive learning materials for Taiwanese hokkien: Nicholas C Bodman's Amoy Spoken Hokkien and the course books from the Taipei Language Institute. My questions, if anyone can answer:
1) Does the Amoy Spoken Hokkien book include chinese characters for its conversations in addition to romanisation (to me it is useless without characters)?
2) Anyway to get hold of the TLI course books without joining the course (I am not based in Taiwan)?
3) Are there any other books which you recommend which give (i) romanisation, (ii) characters, (iii) grammar explanations?
Many thanks - Graham

Learning Hokkien material
Re: Learning Hokkien material
Hi Graham!
Bodman's book is great (albeit somewhat dated - 1960s) but it does NOT have any characters. I've spent many hours trying to find characters for the more obsucre word by browsing through dictionaries and adding them by hand ...
The TLI page looks impressive (wasn't aware of them yet). Did you already contact their NY branch?
Regards
Aurelio

Re: Learning Hokkien material
Hello Aurelio,
Many thanks - I half suspected and really didn't want to buy the book (which is not cheap) on the hope that it contained some characters. My search for good material continues.
Best regards - Graham
