The Origin of Teochiu

Post by Teochiu Nang »

I am a Teochiu-American interested in my heritage. Actually, my father is Teochiu nang and my mother is Daiwan (Taiwan) lang. Where did the Teochius come from? There is no doubt that the language spoken in Teochiu is related to Hokkienese (sp. S. Hokkien). Therefore, I always thought that the Teochius were originally Hokkienese who migrated south to Teochiu in Guangdong Province. If this is what really happened, I would like to know more about the history of such migration. Anyone who has any knowledge of this topic, enlighten me.

Hi Teochiu Nang

I am also Teochiu-American. If you want to know more about Teochiu and your roots, you can visit the website of a new organization called GAGINANG dedicated to preserving and enriching Teochiu Culture all over the world:

www.gaginang.org

Also, feel free to EMAIL: tylim@mail.com, or AIM: tylimnyc

As for your question, yes you are right, Teochiu and Hokkiens are defiinitely related. For more info on this you can go to: www.rosettaproject.org
and go to the minnan listing (under Sino-tibetan Languages).

Yes, there are quite a number of Teochiu in the US. Los Angeles and Philadelphia has sizeable populations of Teochiu. I don't know how many exactly, but you can see some of the things that Teochiu in the US are trying to organize for themselves in the US and Canada:
