Fuzhou Dialect - Resources? Formal Name?

Post by Tom »

Hi,

What is the formal name for the language they speak in Fuzhou, Capital of Fujian? I would like to learn this language. I am an American and I speak Mandarin. Does anyone know of any resources in English or Mandarin for learning Fozhou dialect, preferably audio material (tapes, cd's, not a book- although if it was a good dictionary in pinyin that might be ok)? What is the name for it? Fuzhou dialect? Please respond to my email: tch3@aol.com.

Hi! Tom,
The dialect spoken in Fuzhou is Min-Dong (eastern Fujian, not northern Fujian) dialect, a sub-group of the Min dialect. You can refer to James Campbell's website: www.glossika.com. Hope this will be of help to you.

Could someone please give me some information about the Fuzhou dialect -- ie, what sounds in English would not exist in this dialect (as well as other common dialectical and linguisitic issues for a person from this region who was trying to learn English)?
Thanks.
