Can someone please translate my last name to chinese charact
Re: Can someone please translate my last name to chinese cha
Hi Jie Ning,
my guess is "Jie Ning" is actually in Mandarin and not in Hokkien. If you know what the characters of your name entail, it would help a lot. For now, I guess it would be 潔寧 in traditional characters and 洁宁 in simplified.

If what Jie Ning means by last name is family name 'Loo', I guess there are several possibilities:
羅 lo5 -> sounds like "Lo!" in English (luo2 in Mandarin; 罗 in simplified form)
盧 lo`5 -> sounds like "law" in English (Mdr: lu2 ; 卢)
呂 lu7 (ly7 in Cuanciu accent, Mdr: lv3 ; 吕)

盧 lo`5 -> sounds like "law" in English (Mdr: lu2 ; 卢)
呂 lu7 (ly7 in Cuanciu accent, Mdr: lv3 ; 吕)

Just to add to Niuc's post, 魯 loo3 (like the word law) is also possible. Must remember that last name = surname the next time...

« is also possible... I have a friend who's surname is also "Loo" and uses this character.

Yes, also 魯 (lo`2 in our accent) and (lu5 in Cuanciu accent i.e. including ours; ju5 in Ciangciu).
The previous thread on surnames http://www.chinalanguage.com/forum/read ... 317&t=1317 also has:
婁 lo`5
路 lo`7
閭 lu5 (Cuanciu: ly5)
庾 Cuanciu: lu2, Ciangciu: ju2
