Learning Taiwanese in Taiwan

Post by A-hiong »

I was just wondering, since they are starting to teach Taiwanese in Taiwan how are they teaching it? Do they use Pehoeji or Romanji or maybe using the Taiwanese version of zhouyin? Personally I learn zhouyin for Mandarin and I think since most kids in Taiwan already know it, it would be easier for them to just use the Taiwanese version of zhouyin. Just wondering. I see so many ways to write Taiwanese it gets confusing...I'd prefer to just use characters. Every site that I find too uses a lot of romanji, very few sights I can find that use the Taiwanese version of zhouyin.

Back to the question: Any system is used, depending on where Taiwanese is taught. In Kaohsiung, POJ is very strong. In Northern and Central Taiwan, textbooks with characters, zhuyin (about 40 different systems in the last 15 years) and TLPA are used. There is no standard.
